Sarah Martinez, 34, had spent most of her adult life telling herself she "wasn't a runner." She tried twice before and quit within two weeks both times. Then something changed.
The Turning Point
In June 2024, Sarah's doctor told her that her blood pressure was creeping into dangerous territory. "I had a 6-year-old daughter," she says. "That conversation scared me into action in a way nothing else had."
She didn't start with a marathon goal. She started with 10 minutes of walking.
Finding Her Gym Community
Using Find My Fitness, Sarah discovered a running club that met at a local fitness center three times a week. "I almost didn't go the first time," she admits. "I showed up and everyone was so welcoming. No one cared that I was slow. That first night changed everything."
The Training
Sarah followed a beginner-to-5K program for the first three months, then graduated to a 10K training plan. The community at her running club kept her accountable through cold mornings and the inevitable bad weeks.
By month nine, she was running her first half marathon.
The Marathon
Eighteen months after her first 10-minute walk, Sarah crossed the finish line of the Dallas Marathon in 5 hours and 12 minutes. She cried through the last mile.
"I'm not fast," she says. "I'll never be fast. But I finished. And my daughter was at the finish line. That's the whole point."
What She Wants Others to Know
"Stop waiting until you're ready, because that day doesn't come. Find a community. Find people who are further along than you. Show up even when you don't want to. The rest takes care of itself."
